Week 5 Notes Homework and Videos

NOTES ARE MOSTLY THE SAME AS WEEK 3.  YOU CAN ADD DISTRACTIONS TO THE SEND TO PLACE EXERCISE NOW (PEOPLE AND/OR CHILDREN WALKING AROUND YOUR HOME, DOING IT OUTSIDE AND SO ON).  YOU WANT IT TO BE CHALLENGING FOR HIM BUT NOT OVERWHELMING.

Homework Schedule:

Calming Exercises (Rotate these three exercise on different days ie Monday Sit on The dog, Tuesday Long Place and Wednesday Relax for Exam so On):

  1. Sit on the Dog 30 + minutes Goal:  To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under.

  2. Long Place Build to 30 minutes   Goal:  To get your dog comfortable and more relaxed staying on their place for thirty  minutes on dropped or tethered leash.  Week 4 There are no changes from Week 3.

  3. (NEW) Relax for Exam 15 minutes Goal:  To get your dog accustomed to being examined by you.  You want your dog learn how to relax themselves when you do this.

Obedience Exercises:
  1. (SAME) Sit with Correction (on the floor)  if Needed  5 + minutes Goal:  To have your dog able do 3 sessions of 4 in a row sits without a verbal or collar correction (meaning you need to give a verbal and/or collar correction when needed. (practice the loose tight loose collar correction) Week 5:   There is no change, but pay attention to your timing and handling during this as on the down correction videos when I demoed it.  I like to get the three sessions of 4 in a row done in less than 5 minutes as a goal.
  2. (CHANGED) Sit Stays at a Distance 5 + minutes (maybe more like 10 to 15 minutes when you start at lower time)  Goal:  For your dog to be able to sit stay when you are two steps away for 30 seconds for times in a row.  This is a warm-up for "Approach by Friendly Stranger" exercise.

  3. (STAY CHANGED) Approach by Friendly Stranger 5 + minutes Goal:  To be able to have your dog sit stay for 30 seconds while your helper walks up to him and at his shoulder.

  4. (NEW) Beginning of the Recall 5 + minutes  Goal:  To be able to have him come up to you and then sit in front of you.  Note:  You can recall him from sit or from his place (especially if he is giving you a hard time about sit).

  5. (SAME) Down with correction when needed 5+ minutes Goal:  To be able to get three sets of four in a row without correction.

  6. (SAME) Send to Place 5 plus minutes Goal:  To get your dog to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets.  Week 5 Remains the same.

  7. (SAME) Circle Place 5 plus minutes  Goal:  To be able to perform 4 circle places in a row for one minute.  Week 5 remains the same with the leash dropped.  You could probably do this with more distractions like opening and closing doors (as long as they are safe and do not lead directly to outside).
